Simplifying
9x + 4 = 3x + 1
Reorder the terms:
4 + 9x = 3x + 1
Reorder the terms:
4 + 9x = 1 + 3x
Solving
4 + 9x = 1 + 3x
Solving for variable 'x'.
Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.
Add '-3x' to each side of the equation.
4 + 9x + -3x = 1 + 3x + -3x
Combine like terms: 9x + -3x = 6x
4 + 6x = 1 + 3x + -3x
Combine like terms: 3x + -3x = 0
4 + 6x = 1 + 0
4 + 6x = 1
Add '-4' to each side of the equation.
4 + -4 + 6x = 1 + -4
Combine like terms: 4 + -4 = 0
0 + 6x = 1 + -4
6x = 1 + -4
Combine like terms: 1 + -4 = -3
6x = -3
Divide each side by '6'.
x = -0.5
Simplifying
x = -0.5

first you need to decide which side of the equals sign you gather the x's and which side the numbers, to give you a value for x.
You dont want a negative x, but its fine to have a negative number. so, take away 3x from both sides because thats the smallest amount hence is doesn't leave you with a negative x. so you are lefty with 6x+4=1. Now you must take the four away so that you are left with only an x on one side and a value on the other. so minus 4 from both sides to bring the left side down to 0. so now you have 6x=-3. So you have found what 6x is but you must find what x is equal to, so you divide both sides by 6 to get -0.5. so x=-0.5. And thats the answer.
Hope this helps. :)

First: combine "like" terms > subtract 4 from both sides (moving a variable to the opposite side means: use the opposite sign)....
9x + 4 - 4 = 3x + 1 - 4
9x = 3x - 3
Sec: subtract 3x from both sides....
9x - 3x = 3x - 3x - 3
6x = - 3
Third: solve for "x" by isolating it on one side > divide both sides by 6....
6x/x = - 3/6
x = -3/6
*Simplify the fraction into lowest terms, if possible....
x = -1/2
