Because it is found around horses, and when they sting a horse, they dont feel it. Believe me when a horsefly stings you, you will know all about it. They are much larger than a normal fly and their wings cross over

probably from a 19th century saying of "as big as a horse"..therefore "horsefly" entered the American English language.
