How old is the kid? Age can be a factor in how you teach to reach the child's interest in learning.

do activities that are experiential. you should know first the things that interest the child and weak points. from there try to incorporate it in teaching or developing her weaknesses. for example, the child loves drawing and is poor in mathematics, try making picture presentations of objects and teach him/her addition. always see to it that you recognize the good things he/she did so he would feel motivated the next time.

Mostly by example. Monkey see, monkey do. Show them. Tell them at the same time, but show them. And don't expect them to pick up good habits observing your bad ones.
