America was "discovered" by Native Americans (that is, the Indians), of which I am part. Their land was taken from them by the Europeans and their cultures all but destroyed. The "discovery" by Columbus was one of the most important events in world history, but it wasn't all good.

Columbus did not discover America. Even the Vikings went to America before Columbus did, but like you said, how can you discover a country that is already inhabited?
I guess the Native Americans discovered America (or was there possibly someone else even before them?).

"How can you discover a country, that already has human inhabitants?" is exactly the right question. America was discovered by Europeans, and it's European Americans who make the history, so that's how the history was slanted.
It is correct to say that Europeans settled in an already inhabited America.

Well, the "Russians" where the first to settle to North America.
The Vikings were the next. THey even had a permanent settlement with regular trade ships shuttleing between the new and the old world.
Columbus did not quite discover America. Ju just arrived there but thought to have reached china (And believed this until his death.)
It was Amerigo Vespuchi (please don't mind me spelling his name presumably wrong) who identified America as a continent.
The question is: WHich caveman sort of invented the fire:
Caveman A who saw a burning tree?
Caveman B who picked up a stick and burned his fur ... eh.. hand?
Caveman C who picked up the stick to burn Caveman B again?

Invaded by greedy, destructive, Europeans. Get over it. We're staying.
The "Geico Cave Men" discovered it. They were looking for investment property.
If you want to discover a country, turn the t.v. off and take a long leizurely walk somewhere, anywhere and pay attention.
