Hi-there! I have a dwarf hamster, Mace, I've had him since July-ish. He lives in his own cage, by himself, well around, October or November we noticed that his eye was starting to bug out and looked even redder than normal, he is supposed to have big bright red eyes. We didn't think much of it, then a few days after that there was a huge puss pocket or something on the eye. Didn't know what to do for him, we called the vet, but figured it wasn't worth taking him. I love animals and hate to see them suffer, but couldn't justify taking a $5 dollar hamster to the vet with a minimum bill of $45. Well a few days after the pocket appeared, it disappeared and his eye sucked into his head, needless to say, he went blind. But he was fine, never seemed to bother him. He ate, drank and climbed his cage like normal. Well his cage got cleaned out 4 days ago and he seemed fine, when I went to check on him yesterday, it looked like his other eye was closed. Got to looking closer and its hardly open, not sure if he can see out of it. But he hasn’t been hiding/sleeping in his little house lately; he has been out and about, just sort of setting there or sleeping out in the open, even during the day. And I noticed that he appears to have lost a lot of weight, he is really thin. I think he might possibly be blind in the other eye now too. But I don’t know why? Anyone have any ideas on why he went blind? Why he is so thin? Is he dieing? My husband suggested just killing him, painlessly. So he wont have to suffer, but I just can’t do that, but I still can’t justify taking him to the vet. What should I do any suggestions?

I think it is horible that you think that just because I can't justify the vet bill that I don't care. If your goldfish gets sick are you going to take him to the vet, no. I love all of my animals very much....

What kind of bedding are you using? If it is pine or cedar - wood chips of any kind - he may be getting splinters in his eyes.

Make sure his food is easily accessible. Give him chunks of apple or carrots, etc, that he can easily smell and get to, even if he has lost his sight completely.

Good luck.

It sounds like your hamster is slowly dying, probably suffering alot, as anyone would who's lost an eye. I would suggest you take him to the vet to be put to sleep - immediately.
If you had taken him in before when you first noticed the problem with his eye, the vet would probably have cured him and he'd be happy and healthy now - instead he's going through hell.
I'm sure you've spent at least $45 while you've had him on food, or his cage....is that really too much to spend now to at least end his suffering?
He depended on you for his health and well-being - look at him now and ask yourself if you've fulfilled that promise to him.

I can't believe you care at all about him, really. You couldn't justify saving the life of your pet because you only spent $5 on him? If you're not going to take him to the vet there is nothing you can do. Hell, even if you did take him to the vet it's probably too late for him anyway. Why don't you just sit in front of his cage and watch him die?

Gees...looks like the little guy is going thru hell. Don't flush him down the toilet, rather take a shovel, take him into the basement, give out a huge yell as you smash him. That way, it gives you the energy and you won't hear the noise if there is one.

It's no worse than a car accident that knocks you out cold.
