The currency of Egypt is the pound, the Egyptian pound is divided into 100 piastres. There are several currency units as indicated in the following table, every banknote has two faces, one in Arabic and usually has pictures of a well known mosque in Egypt and the other face is in English and has pictures of ancient Egyptian figures, statues or generally monuments.

Most places in Sharm will accept either because of the high concentration of tourists there. But it is always best to work in the currency of the country you are in as some places are known to charge a "surcharge" for foreign currency because there is a fee for changing money at legitimate places. However, I agree with the person who said Sharm is boring. It does not paint an accurate picture of what Egypt really is. I recently spent 6 weeks in Egypt and flew to Sharm planning to spend 10 days there. I left after only 2 days to go back to Cairo. Unless you are really into diving (I'm not) there is nothing to do there and all you will see is European tourists. I used to live in Florida and it looked exactly the same. Also, things tend to get a bit more expensive in Sharm because there is less competition as opposed to Cairo.

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound...they also call it ( L.E.) which is an abbreviation for the french word ( livre Egyptienne) which means Egyptian pound.

I agree with the others, save that the basic unit of currency (ie equivalent to the US cent or British pence) is the 'piaster', which given the weakness of the Egyptian pound, is so valueless that beggars will often refuse them or at best sneer when given them.
