we keep thinking 'tumbleweed' but thats not the word we're after" anyone know??

its definitely not dust devils that we were thinking of..... 'merry weather' keeps springing into my mind but its not that! and the word 'drift'........ arghhhh!!

THEY ARE CALLED DUST DEVILS. SOME PEOPLE CALL THEM DIRT DEVILS, BUT I THINK THAT TERM ARRIVED WHEN THE OKLAHOMA DIRT BOWLS WERE SO BAD DURING THE DROUGHT THEY HAD BACK IN THE 40'S (?) ALBEIT NOT QUITE AS BAD AS THEN, I CALL THEM (AND WHERE I'M FROM ---FARMING COMMUNITY) PEOPLE CALL THEM DUST DEVILS

dust devils or whirlwinds. But I read a short story that had one called Kitten. Originally published in 1948 in Weird Tales, Robert A Heinlein wrote "Our Fair City." It has since been reprinted in a collection of his "6 x H." Also, check out Wikipedia.org on the subject. They have a little video of some on Mars.

Dust devils...kind of like mini tornadoes. I saw several while living in Las Vegas.
