No you cant get a virus by just visiting a page but you can get by installing active-x components or downloading files from that web site , and the files can be any thing even pictures or videos

YES! it has happened to me before but my anti virus picked up on it and removed it. I was just searching real estate pages and I ended up on a college web site by accident and the warning came up of a Trojan virus and McAfee virus scan removed it. You DO NOT have to be downloading anything to get one, I promise you that, and anyone with any knowledge to this subject will attest that is right.

this kind of attack become a real issue with the emerge of web2.0 platforms. users can use sharing sites to put malicious code (which has no patter so AV cant really stop it). some technologies are available to prevent it. further, ask for ISP's that provide a secure surfing. i can provide you tons of links that will infect your computers only by visiting. drive-by-hacking.....
