I bought it yesterday and installation was supposed to take 20 minutes. However, I tried for hours, to no avail. The installation CD kept instructing me to hook up my BellSouth DSL modem to the router using the ethernet cables; however, my normal DSL connection is through a blue cable hooked to my USB port on my laptop. The other end of the USB cable does not have an outlet that fits into the ports on the router. When I tried to use the extra ethernet cables that came with my DSL modem, I cannot connect to the internet. Is there a wireless router out there with a port that will accept my USB-connected cable, or am I supposed to be able to connect to the internet using the ethernet cable also. Please help!! I have packed the router back up to return to the store when I get off work!!!

How do I get into the Linksys setup page. I actually thought I had succeeded, b./c I got to the end of the installation CD and the internet was connected and automatically went to the Netgear Router login page, but no option came up to login using the default passwords. Also, I am not planning to do home networking; I just want to use my one laptop anywhere in the house without the cables running everywhere.

You will need to use an ethernet cable to connect to your modem. You may have to start over by uninstalling the usb modem driver from your pc, reconnecting your modem directly to your network port on your pc and load the proper driver. Establish a connection before you even try to connect your router. Once the modem is operating, then connect your router wan port to the modem and your pc to the lan port 1 on the router.

i assume you are on cable Virgin Media service and you have actually got a Netgear WGR614 as far as i know you can just connect it up the way you say and it should work, but the key thing is the order in which to turn stuff on. from what i remember the cable modem logs onto Virgin via it's MAC address (no username/password needs to be entered, unlike what this Tech Guru is saying) normally if you have the modem on one PC it is fine, but if you swap cable modem from one PC to another, it has to be rebooted. if you're plugging in cable modem to the Netgear, the same kind of thing applies. i guess you should just power everything off, then power on the Netgear only. give it a minute, then power on the cable modem. the Netgear should then detect the cable modem and get the external IP address that the PC would ordinarily get if that were plugged straight into the cable modem. my own personal experience, i bought a Linksys wireless router for somebody and just plugged it into the cable modem and it worked straight away, the Netgear should do the same. if not there is the small chance the Netgear could be faulty so i guess you should contact Netgear about that.

I'm pretty sure I know what is going on. You have an IP conflict with Bellsouth. I know this. I have Bellsouth too. See what they did is take IP address 192.168.1.1 for themselves. Your Linksys router ships with that address as the Local IP address. Go into the Linksys setup screen and change the local IP to 192.168.2.1, then save the changes and reboot the Linksys router. Once you have done this, you should be on. Then, you have to make the local address ranges. You might want to choose a range like

192.168.2.100 - 192.168 .2.105

if you are planning to share your connection. Good luck.

If your modem doesn't have an Ethernet port you won't be able to use the router. You'll need to have the modem switched out for one with an Ethernet port.
