study music, learn your guitar and learn to recognize keys. That's how your friend does it. He recognizes chord progression. Basically 1-4-5. If you don't know what that means there is your clue. The key of D is D and G and A.

Either your friend has REAL perfect pitch, which means it's just a skill he has developed subconsciously (which probably means he's musically inclined) or he has used a system called Perfect Pitch, which is a product you can buy. Rather than buy Perfect Pitch yourself, you can teach yourself perfect pitch, basically, by taking any song that you can hum the first note of. (For example, you probably know the song "Stairway to Heaven". The first note of the guitar intro to that song is A natural) Then, have someone play a single note for you until you can name any ONE note by just hearing it (NOT by watching someone play it) Once you can name any of the twelve notes (C natural-B natural), start learning INTERVALS (two-note combinations played simultaneously) by ear, then, once you've mastered that, learn three-note combos (chords) and there you are. Be aware, though, that since you can't play by ear right now, you don't have REAL perfect pitch, which means you will HAVE to practice practice practice if you want to consciously learn how to do it. If you don't have the willpower to invest a decent amount of time into practicing this method, don't bother. If you definitely want to learn it but my answer isn't clear enough, I suggest buying the Perfect Pitch system, which is probably about sixty bucks through Musician's Friend or any other outlet that sells music instruction software/books/cds. Hope that helped.
