Live and love.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

First of all, thank you for asking this question. There's more to it than meets the eye. The age old question asked directly so I'll respond with a direct response.

Mine: To serve God. Others: Depends of if they a Christian or Satanic.

Beyond God alone, although I would hardly call this a purpose rather than a personal mission, my goal is to provide the world with my blueprints for how to pay for government while reducing and eliminating all public debt and then continue to pay for government while reducing and finally eliminating all forms of taxation until the need for debt financing is eliminated first and then the need for taxation is eliminated entirely while still providing the financing for government.

While my goal is to provide this information my intention is to see it enacted rather than discussed. And that will require commitment from not just political leaders but understanding and commitment from ordinary citizens. Trust me: if you fail to understand how this works some other politician will come along in the future and take debt and tax elimination public policy off the agenda and bury it. See the distinction?

If this sounds like a wild dream think again. I've already got several alternate plans detailed and in writing. The real question I have here is what would you do with this information if you had it? How would you go about it step by step to see this public policy enacted?

Please think before responding. Think of it in terms of a military battle where lives hang in the balance and you're the commander on the battlefield. What's the best way to get this public policy firmly in the minds of millions upon millions of Americans so that they not only understand it but are able to do their little part to ensure pressure is put on candidates and elected officials (of all walks) to support this and commit to it?

The purpose of life is happiness. The plan of salvation breaks the purpose of life down into four main missions in mortality: receiving a physical body, obtaining personal perfection, acquiring prerequisite knowledge, and forming eternal family units.

There are many purposes of life and each person's life has a different main purpose. My main purpose in life is to develop relationships with other people and to be God's lampstand and friend.

The main purpose of life is for you to be happy.

In effect, it is the pursuit of happiness. The only social/economic system which embraces this concept is Capitalism.

Life just happens... without purpose. If your life is to have a purpose, that purpose will have to be adopted.

All in all, I'd say you can't go wrong following your passions.

Of course you have to be moral while doing that.

I think we each have a purpose to our life, and it is worth finding out what it is. How to do it? I think a good hint is what you love doing.

There is also the American Indian idea of vision quests. Meditation and fasting in order to receive a vision of what your life purpose is. I think it is well worth doing. I did it and it has given me a lot of clarity about my life.
