Get a furnace tech to look at it. The furnace is equipped with a safety shutoff so the unit will not run in case if a failure thus preventing a catastrophy (i.e. gas build up and explosion, carbon monoxide poisoning...)

It may be as simple as a bad thermocouple. This is the long metal wire that runs from the gas valve and has a bulb that sits in the flame of the burner pilot. It's job is to sense that the burner pilot is lit OK and lets the gas valve know it's OK to send gas to the main burner. If the thermocouple is bad then the burner will not come on at all. It's a fairly simple replacement.

If you problem does not seem like the thermocouple, then get a tech to look at it.

IF you live in the current Ice Arena Area, you could be one of us who are not getting enough gas pressure to keep it lit, call your gas provider and ask first. I had a plumber come check my Hot water heater, because the pilot lit but wouldn't stay on, or lite the burner. He installed a new thermocoupler and told me to keep it clean and that it was also the Gas not getting enough gas pressure due to so many using gas during this time for heat.

OK, sounds like the pilot is staying on. That is a good sign. At least you know that you don't have a draft coming in there. Sounds like it could very easily be a relay that won't come on until you "reset" it. I would check the relay for the ignitor.

The ignitor may need to be replaced. Have a technician check it and replace it if necessary. Should cost around $100 (including parts) to have it done, $40 for the part if you do it yourself.

WELL, FOR INSTANCE YOU MAY HAVE A BIRDS NEST IN THE FLUE PIPE. CHECK AND SEE IF THE FLUE PIPE IS CLEAR AND THE HOT GASES CAN EXHAUST. THERE IS NO THERMOCOUPLE, IT IS AN AUTO IGNITION SYSTEM.
