Thats not fair, there are people everywhere who are ignorant and arrogant. It's just a shame that the English seem to be the worst offenders. The only good thing they WERE good at was colonising.......give the Saxons a break!

We are not all like that. I was amazed at how much of my schoolboy French I was able to recall on a recent visit to Paris and also managed to learn a little Spanish before a trip to Argentina a few years ago. I am however struggling with Thai, I have a g/f in Bangkok now, but do at least remember to use the simple phrases like 'please', 'thank you', 'hello' and 'goodbye' etc. Basically, it's just a matter of making a litle bit of an effort and not being so lazy as to expect the indigenous people to understand us.

Don't lump us as all the same, I do not treat any country I go to as little England, if I were to do that then what would be the point of visiting other countries, I learn the language of which ever country I go to, eat their food and treat the people who live their with respect.

Speak for yourself - whenever I go abroad I always try to speak a little of the language! I don't admit to being proficient but I try and that makes all the difference!
Like the man in Paris said to me a year or so ago - you are English but you try to speak to us in French, at least you tried! And we like that in you!
He spoke better English than most English by the way!

I think because many people are too lazy to even attempt to learn the language of the country they're in. It's easier for them to continue to speak English and expect others to try to understand than to reach middle ground.
Then you have others who think that the U.S. or other English-speaking countries are much better, and they display this arrogance in these countries. Being obnoxious is a total put-off.
Of course, this is all based on option and observation (i.e. the people who SHOUT thinking it would get foreigners to understand)

Don't lump us all together, or think we are the only nation at it dude. Some of us like a bit of tapas and talk a little lingo.
How many times have you been away and heard Americans shouting at taxis drivers (like shouting breaks communication barriers), or been to the bank and seen Germans putting towels in the queue ?

Firstly, it is down to good old fashioned ignorance.
Secondly, the UK is not being overrun by illegals, no matter what the Daily Mail might have you believe.

Many people refuse to integrate when they come into Britian. Perhaps the British are just paying them the same compliment.

Because they have no real culture (maybe apart from Morris dancing) and deep down they know how inferior they actually are. What have they to offer the world? They can't even be bothered to learn the language (not even a phrase) of the places they go to. A total disgrace of a nation.
Katya: I just read your comments. Firstly, well done for learning another language: I stand corrected there with you. You are just one example however and I take it you were living/working or studying in Russia. You really should not boast then, learning the language would be an absolute necessity for any one doing that I'm afraid (not to mention completely rude if you didn't). Secondly, your derogatory comments towards the Scots just shows your own ignorance and unfortunately that of the nation you represent. Crude, ignorant, full of self importance and what exactly is it that you are so proud of? Please explain.
Thanks for the thumbs - seriously.
Skidrow: Again, incoherent ramblings, which kind of proves my point. Good day to you sir.

I'm English and I spend about half the year in Russia. I speak fluent Russian and have a Russian fiance. I spend some time in Poland and I speak passable Polish.
This criticism can't be levelled at the Scots because they can't leave Scotland in case they infect other countries with rabies.
EDIT: Thumbs-down?? What have I said? You can dish it out all right, can't you, but you can't take it when insults are chucked back at you
