Do you think working with YA like this will improve things in the YA LGBT community?

I read through some over there and you know what? Call me a cynic but I believe Yahoo is in the business of making money and that attempting to limit activity of people wouldn't be cost effective. They get their money through numbers of hits on any site be it YA LGBT community or any place else.

The one thing that I do find really annoying is that there seems to be no age restriction of participants. I know it would be kind of hard to do but admit it, some of the most asinine comments and juvenile questions come from the keypboards of really immature people, and all that does is bring down the intelligence level of this area. It makes it very frustrating to weed through crap like "Is Spongebob gay?" I mean, give me a break, or "Someone is doing something to my locker" or "We broke up after six weeks and I don't know what to do", or anything regarding emo, all it does is make me want to shake Yahoo by the neck and let them know that when you promote the mixing of adults and children it is always the whining of the children that drives the adults out of the room. I think these little teeny boppers need their own area to ask if Susie or Sammy is gay.

Seems reasonable.

The idea of IP tracking makes a lot of sense - some of the posts on here would be actionable if spoken aloud in the real world.

It all depends on Yahoo taking it seriously, which I don't think they do. So much homophobic and racist stuff stays on the system for weeks, while perfectly innocuous questions and answers are bounced off willy-nilly.

Problem with your idea Beth B is that that would cause problems for people who legitimately share a computer.

Dispite your claim I still think you are tolling but I'll answer it because I'm bored. I personally am a supporter of gays gay pride and what not (me beiung gay and trans). But this is one o the reasons I choose not to be an advocate of the gay community. I love my lgbt peeps but some can get out of hand. The GSA is supposed to help gays and straight people get along. Just like thee are gay haters there are straight haters. I myself would never do such a thing I try not to bring much attention to myself unless its around friends or un LGBT related. Congrats on the proposal though. Best wishes to your girlfriend.

I approve your question plus what people have said about tracking people's IP addresses. I think if we did those things in combination then we may make a dent in the amount of haters on this and other sections of Y!A.

However, we need to make them care. I resent the fact that I feel that I and other posters are the ones that are doing the real work of trying to get rid of the abusers. It's gotten so bad that just_ine_credible is taking submissions from people reporting the hateful posts and sending them to the FBI because of Yahoo's complacency. You may ant to email her for more info on this. *wink*

It's a good idea... Maybe Yahoo should start making a rule about only one Yahoo id per ip address.

one more thing that I've mentioned myself to the YA gods ..... they do have the ability to track IP addresses. I'm a Moderator for another website and we have capabilities of blocking IP addresses of people that wish to abuse the site. Just a suggestion.

I think so. If Yahoo starts making a rule about only one Yahoo id per ip address, we will only have ONE idiot arassing around here.

it might help...slightly. I think the most persistent abusers will breeze right through that. and I agree with the previous poster about YA tracking the abusers through their IP addresses...I'm sure the big abusers have multiple email addresses.
