In Europe, once Hitler killed himself in his bunker, his next in command surrendered to the Russian army (we had let them do the fighting inside Berlin). In the Pacific, the war ended the day after we dropped the second atomic bomb. The Japanese generals still wanted to fight on, but the emporer stepped in and ordered them to surrender.
