Gas is sourced in below the surface at depth between 800-5000 meter in most areas. The process of gas generation is not easy. it generates at a place and the migrates to other place and trapped in the reservoir. onething should be keep in mind that gas generates at more temperature than oil. i.e. organing matter changes to kerogen to oil to gas.

deep under the earth, due to decomposition of organic matter under high temperature and pressure and it takes many years to convert organic matter into gas
