Computers play an important role in classrooms of all ages. Computers are and will be part of the future whether it comes to personal communications or advancement. We cannot live in the age of the typewriter forever! The typewriter was a great tool in its time and sometimes it is still used today in various occupations. One day the computer will be replaced as well. Someday, more ignorant people will ask this same question about whatever replaces the computer. Some think that the computer is for the gain of the "lazy educator" when they do not have a clue of what they are talking about.

In their day and age, the typewriter wasn't introduced until 5th or 6th grade. People need to realize that a childs learning is advancing daily. One example is currently 6th grade students are doing algebraic expressions using X, Y, Z. When I was in 6th grade in 1987, we didnt have this math in our class. Yes, we had similar math but we we're using numbers. Algebra, in it's true form, was not introduced to us until 7th grade. The use of the computer has evolved in the classroom as well.

Children may play games on the internet or play loaded programs but 80% of the time these classroom games have an educational purpose. Games on the computer serve the audio and the visual learning process of the student. Let me break it down in simple form for the ingnorant people. When you are taught something you either learn by hearing directions or learn by watching someone do something. The computer brings both of these together for your childs benefit of learning. The sounds and buzzes grab the attention of the child which doesnt realize it is learning as it plays the game too often. Then there are programs which are obviously made for learning.

In closing, to say that a teacher is "lazy" for showing a child how to use a computer is foolish!!! If you really want to see "lazy" in action, look at the parents who buy Nintendo DS's , GameCube's, Xboxes and plant their kids in front of them for hours on end and do not spend quality time with their children.... By the way, these game systems are computers also so who is the "lazy" one now?

before high school they shouldnt be allowed to use computers, during school anyway, they should be concentrating on learning how to read and write and do math without a calculator. Id have to say that most of them use them at home anyway, and they never do anything that couldnt be learned by a highschool student in about five minutes. I think it is just a knee jerk reaction by lazy educators.
