Most likely you need a new cd reader. They are only about 20.00 and you can install it by yourself, they come with directions.

Well, it could be any number of things. You might first try using one of those CD/DVD drive cleaner discs to see if it's a case of the laser lens inside the drive being dirty. Next, using "My Computer", right click on the drive and then click on "Properties" and check if "Auto Play" is active. If you've checked that the next step would be to right click on "My Computer", then click on "Properties", then click on the "Hardware" tab, then on "Device Manager". At that point, find the drive listing, right click on it, and then select "Uninstall" from the choices. Once you've done that, exit, and then reboot your computer....Windows will see the drive as "New Hardware" and re-install the driver for the drive. Then try a CD again. If none of this works, the chances are that you'll need to replace the drive. Given the fairly low prices of combo drives at this time, you might as well replace it with a DVD/CD burner drive. Below is a link to an example. Good luck.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
