Because of the difference in chargers, (wattage, current flow, polarity, etc) is is NOT recommended to use a different brand of charger on any laptop. If it is the wrong one, it would take only a fraction of a second to fry the system board and do hundreds of dollars of damage.
Recommend that you stay with the correct brand of power supply for any laptop - not just Dell.
You should be able to order one from the Dell website. Usually they ship it the same day. Can have it within three days. For a little extra they will overnight it if you need. But you will probably not be able to find one in the stores.

Alright heres how you know if the charger is bad or not. If you plug the charger in the wall and also the laptop and the green light is strong and then fades to nothing.... unplug the charger from the laptop and unplug it from the wall and then plug it back into the wall. If the light stays solid green then theres something wrong with your motherboard, not the charger. You could also look for someone around you who has a Dell and borrow their charger. Post on craigslist or just go to a local college and look in the lounges for a laptop. You could even go to a tech store and see if you could just use an adapter for a minute right there in the store. I'd hate to see you replace the adapter and find out it's the laptop.

yes most of your chargers are on the same amps and voltage , disregard any talk on splicing, i would never recomend that at all,
they do sell universal chargers to fit most laptops generic brands, at some Walmart stores they sell these and comes along with different plug ends to adapt to plug into your dell, other stores i recomend is best buy, also if you are a online shopper i do get alot of my stuff hardware etc.. from www.newegg.com & www.cyberguys.com cyber guys here lately have been the cheapest for myself, but if you go thru dell expect a high price, i understand that time is your biggest concern so i would try walmart, best buy, radioshack, or any other electronic store around your home, best of luck if you could supply me with the model # of the dell and the type plug i may actually have on that would fit it, but time issue would be a problem as i am away from hhome, and will be for a few more weeks , best of luck, i use a lap top for business also, i understand where you are coming from...

You could probably find a charger with similar volts and amps, but then you'd have to splice some wires. Most likely you are going to have to get it online. You might be able to find a third party vendor. Just type in DELL LAPTOP CHARGER on Google and see what is available.

1. a charger from dell only is recommended
> it supply's power to the laptop to function, as well as charges the batteries
if u read carefully: input voltage 100 - 250 volts ac & output voltage is 19.5 volts dc
ampere rating varies, depending on model
in addition, the pin configuration at end of charger is proprietary dell
no way any other make can work
besides one made by specialists like targus, but u'll end up paying more than dell
http://www.targus.com/us/powerstore.asp
2. i too think u'r charger is bad, however i would like you to please confirm
remove charger from notebook & power up charger
does the little green light still fade or not
plz. inform me, while i complete my answer ...
if u can locate a dell direct store near you, nothing like it ... just ring up store & pick up
http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/dds?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml
else, wait for it to arrive by ups in a couple of days
... hope i could help
im / mail me if i can help any further

That means your Gateway charger has a higher charging capacity or faster charging but safe to use since it is also 19 volts.

Your better off going to Dell and getting one from them because getting a charger that is not designed for your computer can and will fry it to death.

It would be best to buy one from Dell. You could try somewhere like Radio Shack. They may have one, but bring your old one in so that they can get the power and polarity right on it.

provided the voltage and ampage are the same yes.
There are several third party companies that build power supplies with variable voltage and interchangeable plugs.
Here in australia I'd look in Harvey norman or Dick smith, i.e. stores with general electronic goods
