will be there for about 2 - 3 weeks and would like to do my own shopping , I know there are a whole load of places to shop but a few good choices would be nice as just looking in the phone book is not always the best option

If you will be in the more residential areas (not Times Square, for example), you're bound to find a supermarket within 3 or 4 blocks. The ones I've seen are: Food Emporium, Gristedes, D'agostino's, Associated. For nicer, organic products, there's Gourmet Garage, Whole Foods (Union Square), Trader Joe's (Union Square), Grace's (Upper East), Eli's (Upper East), and Agata & Valencia (Upper East).

On the weekends, there are farmer's markets where you can get really fresh produce that is less expensive than the stores. Also, there are fruit and vegetable stands in many neighborhoods during the day.

For really cheap food, head to Chinatown and bring a cart.

There's also the online grocer, Fresh Direct. You order online and they deliver it to your place. There's a minimum of 40 bucks or something and a small delivery fee of 5, but I've found the produce to be fresh and lots of grocery items to be cheaper than the stores.

First of all it's spelled ManhattAn, there's no "e" in Manhattan (I know it SOUNDS like there's an e in Manhattan - but that's just how we pronounce it - we say "man-HAT-en" but we spell it m-a-n-h-a-t-t-a-n)

The best supermarket here is PathMark - there are several of them around the city - one in Chinatown on Pike Slip (take the F train to East Broadway and go out the Madison St exit) and two in Harlem - one on E 125th St between 3rd and Lexington (4, 5, or 6 train to 125th St) and one on W 145th and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (take the A, B, C or D trains to 145th St).

We don't have WalMart here - it's an anti union store and the unions are very strong here so they lobbied the City Council to ban them from opening a store within the city limits.
