We dabbled in imperialism. Took territory from Spain and Mexico, Annexed Hawaii. To mention a few. It was very controversial at time. Gave allot up voluntarily. Gave up the Idea of being an Empire, because its short sighted and just not worth the trouble. If we were an Empire, the troops in Iraq would be German, Italian, Japanese, and Filipino conscripts under US officers. We would be paying $10 a barrel for Oil and selling to the world at $100. Usama Bin Luaden (sp) would be dead under a radioactive sheet of glass with 10 million Innocent Afghanies. Saddam Husein would be our enforcer . . .
Unfortunately our detractors use our past against us. We just have to move forward.

What the USA did not give back..try Texas, California, Arizona,New Mexico. Study the origins of the Mexican and Spanish American wars.....you might see the ugly face of the US Government for what it is
You do not have a clue.....we left 3.5 million dead Vietnamese in a country we has ZERO business in. Never even apologised for all that death...that is the ugly face of america.
The only real, business we had in Vietnam was the WAR business...ask KBR., Boeing, General Dynamics. Bell helicopteirs, Northrup , etc
The USA is a greedy, arrogant nation controlled by special intrests. We are not a democracy, we are a dictatorship of the influential. God does not bless america

I don't know. For all of this country's faults, and there are many, we have it VERY, VERY good. We should consider ourselves lucky; we could be in a country which goes to war over who are leaders will be, or have our people killed almost every day by a suicide bomber.
Is there corruption? Sure. But I'll take corruption (until such people are no longer public officials) over death any day. We are still the envy of many countries who do not have the luxury of freedom, and the governmental model of those who wish to seek it. We're obviously doing something right.
I feel truly blessed to have been born in this great country. We aren't perfect, but we have freedom. And freedom is the most important thing a country can have.

Imperialist countries do not confine their expansionism to their adjacent neighbors. See the definition below.
im·pe·ri·al·ism (ĭm-pîr'ē-ə-lĭz'əm)
n.
1.The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.
2.The system, policies, or practices of such a government.
he·gem·o·ny (hĭ-jĕm'ə-nē, hĕj'ə-mō'nē)
n., pl. -nies.
The predominant influence, as of a state, region, or group, over another or others.
It is my belief if one looks at the definition of imperialism and hegemony it is difficult to make the argument the US has not become an imperialist country. It is also my fervent hope we will be able to stop this modern day tendency to lord it over other nations. It may, sooner or later, be our downfall. I pray it does not come to pass. Our saving grace is that we, the people, if we can be awakened to this trend and believe it to be what it is, will be able to put into positions of power people who will not abuse it.
Most Americans love our country, including me. It is well advised to not simply spout propaganda and wave the flag. Truly study the issues in an unbiased frame of mind, and vote your conscience accordingly.

The U.S is accused of all the things you first mentioned and much, much worse.
What you fail to acknowledge is that America has the largest, far reaching propaganda apparatus in the history of the world.
Whith domastic population under dellusion due to indoctrination that they have a free press.

Why are (were) there US territories located all over the world? England, Spain, France and the US have all been considered imperialists during history as they have all tried to establish colonies in undeveloped lands.

I agree totally with you. It's a jealousy thing. The world hates America and uses anything to bring against it, including accusations of imperialism. People hate us because they envy the life and freedoms we have, plain and simple. The critics are empty talkers.
