I remember that it was a big deal for a celebrity to earn his or her star but now it seems like they give it to anyone who smiles for the camera. Has the Walk of Fame lost its meaning?

Trump is what brought this question to mind but it has been others in the recent future such as Britney Spears. I thought this was a lifetime achievement award so I'm guessing that they assumed her career was over when they gave it to her (as I'm sure it is).

The "meaning" of the walk of fame is tourism. It is a ploy to get people to come there, get out of their cars and spending money. If seeing the Trump star is the goal of some people, so much the better for tourism. Most people today have no idea who Clark Gable was, so for the tourism push is to be successful they must modernize. Trump is a very effective move for them.

You can actually buy your way onto it, so no, it is no longer the honour it once was. PLUS the Rugrats have a star!!
Most afternoons it's littered with McDonald's trash and to think Marilyn Monroe's star is just outside the store.
Not much of an honour at all really.

Wikipedia has an interesting article and trivia on it, including:
~~ In order for a person to get a star on the Walk of Fame, he or she must agree to attend a presentation ceremony and a $15,000 fee must be paid to the Trust for costs such as security at the star ceremony.
~~ The Walk of Fame was created in 1958 by southern Californian artist Oliver Weismuller, who was hired by the city to give Hollywood a "face lift".
~~ Joanne Woodward was the first star on the walk and now there are over 2,300.
~~ Four stars have been stolen from the Walk of Fame.
Those of Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, one of Gene Autry's stars was also taken. It was later found in Iowa.
On November 27, 2005, thieves sawed Gregory Peck's star out of the sidewalk near Gower; the star has been replaced as of September 2006 but the thieves have not been caught.
~~ Gene Autry is the only person to have been honored with all five possible stars, for his contribution in each of the five categories.
~~ Fictional characters that have stars include Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse,Woody Woodpecker, Winnie the Pooh, Donald Duck, Godzilla, Kermit the Frog, Lassie, The Rugrats, The Simpsons and Snow White.

I always thought the Hollywood Walk of Fame should be reserved for the really great movie stars. Then, television came along, and I can understand that many of the great TV stars should be included. Since some TV series are made in Hollywood. However, when I discovered that Donald Trump is getting a star on the walk of fame, it certainly has lost its luster. The Hollywood Walk of Fame has lost its meaning!

I'm with you. I think the Donald is cool and all, but did he need a star on the walk? Come on.

My opinion: no
1 sponsor and $3500 gets you there. Accomplishment in the entertainment world doesn't seem to be a pre-requisite any longer.
