No, it shouldn't be dropped as racism does exist. But I think some clarifications need to be introduced.

a) When someone of one background criticises someone of another background it is not automatically racism without valid specific attacks. It however is bullying, which is still abhorrent.

b) There's a misunderstanding that to be racist you have to only be racist against blacks - so to make a comment against, say an Asian is 'fair game' and a comment back against a white person is just 'questionable'.

It doesn't get used at a drop of a hat. If you are talking about Shilpa then here is a definition of racism

1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

So all of them saying that they all eat with their hands is racism. So many people won't admit that it is racism, but it is. People are bound to think that this question is over that because every other post is about it. Why would you be thinking this way anyway? I know it's not quite the same but not many people have sex with a corpse but you can't remove necrophiliac from the dictionary just because it rarely happens. Racism still does happen alot.

And the point of that would be?

Racism is down to stupidity and ignorance of idiots who can't see beyond the colour of skin, I agree it is over used and abused in modern society today, but removing it from the dictionary will not change that!
Caucasians are constantly at fault with this particular word and to be honest I find it highly offencive when other ethnic society's use it as a means of badgering and cornering a subject when they see fit, be it politically or on an everyday basis...

God - we are making racism out of a interest of Scrabble now. What next, Noughts and crosses? How about Chess – the position the white part fights the black – and continually is going first. FYI the astounding thanks to play scrabble is to settle on an 'authority' previously the game starts, i.e. a nominated dictionary for use in the type of a dispute over the validity of a word. If it truly is in there, then it truly is criminal. those are the guidelines.

Then we should start replacing all words...

Instead of saying crack whore, say Martha Stewart.
Instead of saying masturbation, say Peewee Herman.

And so on and so forth...

Removing a word from the dictionary won't remove the attitude from people. So it's absolutely pointless. Raise your children appropriately and that will be a start to end racism.

Ignoring a problem or pretending its not out there will not make it go away.

The word only exists to describe the behavior. If the behavior didn't exist, the word wouldn't either.

Many words get misused or used too casually. That's natural and its part of the power and flexibility of language. We don't erase words just because they get misused.

sure, you could erase the word, but unfortunately the people who believe and stand up for that sort of behavior and pattern of thought would still need a word to define their ways. until you can erase those people and/or the actual behavior or pattern of thinking from people's minds, then having the word in the dictionary does not make it worse, but only defines what is going on. dig deeper.

No, but people need to really learn what racism is.

I AM PROUD OF BEING A WHITE HETROSEXUAL MALE!

Think me racist and a homophobe if you wish. That is your right. But I am no more discriminatory than anyone that says they are proud of being black or gay. Why can't I be proud of what I am just because I happen to be part of the majority in the culture I live in?
