If the sport requires a very big field, they will call it pitch, course or field e.g. football field
If the sport requires only a just small or medium size courtyard to play as in the old English royal courthouse, it is the term "court".
Basketball and volleyball has to be played in "court".
But table tennis is required even smaller size as if it is not appropriate to use the word court for it.
