Oh Yes! Barbs, Angel Fish, and the like will eat others but its very easy to get a very nice community tank full of different fish. Any pet store should tell you and most of then have info on the tank that tells the aggression or community level of the fish type so you don't even have to ask. Of course keeping them all the same approximate size helps also but be aware you will still lose the occasional fish and if one dies and you don't scoop it out they will eat it also. Also, be very careful where you buy fish from also. If the tanks are dirty and such the fish most likely will be to and you risk bringing infection into a community tank and losing everything. Recommend a quarantine tank for a while to be extra sure you have good fish but if you cant to that make sure there are no sores, spots, lost scales, white spots, tucked fins etc that indicate a sick fish.
All in all, Yes, communal tanks are fine. I kept goldfish and sharks together and happy ;-)

There are definitely certain fish you cannot keep with others. Also you need to make sure your tank is large enough to support more fish. Some fish are known as fin nippers. They aren't overly aggressive but they will nip at the fins of the other fish making those fish prone to disease and also making their fins look raggedy. Other fish can be very territorial and majorly aggressive towards the others in the tank. Research the type of fish you want to add to the tank and see if it's compatible with what you already have. Aquarium fish specialty stores can help you with this and they can help you with how to introduce a new fish into the tank as well. Whatever you do don't ask anyone at PetsMart or Petco (most of the time they don't know what they're talking about). Good luck!

Yes, not all aquarium fish are compatible, and some of them look at others as dinner. Find a reputable pet store and talk to the person who cares for the fish. They will be able to tell you which types of fish are compatible and what to avoid.
Get yourself a book on aquarium fish so that you can become familiar with their characteristics. Its also a good way to see how many varieties there are that you may not be aware of.
Good luck.

Just get fish that get along with your fish. Skip the Oscars, Cichlids and other aggressive fish. My cichlid was a very bad boy. He had to live by himself in an aquarium. He lived 7 years and I couldn't even use snails to keep the algae down.

If it's an incandescent light, yes. More likely it's ich, which can be very difficult to get rid of. You have to treat the fish, as well as the container and water. The best way is to simply increase the water temp to 82 F for about 2 weeks. This will kill the parasite. You can decrease the temp afterward, depending on the species of fish.

Yes, they most certainly will. The best idea is to go to a local pet store or chain (like PetsMart or Petco). They will be able to tell you which fish are aggressive and need to be by themselves or with very few other fish, and which fish are alright to live with many other fish.
A relatively good caveat to follow is that the smaller the fish are, the more likely they are not aggressive and the more likely you are to be able to have them cohabitate with other fish.

I assume you're talking about a fresh water tank.
Cichlids are notorious for this behavior.
Any fish that is territorial may have to be watched.
That includes some bottom feeders.
Check out the links.

Most certainly they can , and will.
Ask your local pet shop which fish are compatable with the ones you already have.

Petsmart has them color coded by different communities you can put together. It really easy to pick the ones you like that go together.
