Your best bet is to sow them after the last frost in your area. Amend the soil with some type of compost and then poke your finger into the soil about an inch, drop in a seed, cover with soil and then water. I usually plant two or three seeds within a few inches of each other ( I have a problem with chipmunks and other small critters eating the seedlings) and when they reach a height of 4-5 inches, thin them to one plant in each spot. Make sure the plants will have at least 12-18 inches between them for best end results. Water deeply at least once a week for best flower head production. Enjoy!

any where any time in pretty well any soil ( they do like to get a dose of sun --- which makes sense ) but if they don't when the heads strike you'll be amazed how they follow the line of the sun (i'e if you have a dull day and are not sure where the sun is in the sky --- look no further than your sunflowers for guidance )
plant the about 6mm in the soil and of course water and keep the water up ( once a week ) until they take off then back off the watering to about once every couple of weeks if conditions suit
once the sunflower head dies off ; cut the head ; let it dry out a bit and you have instant sunflower seeds ( enough to start your own sunflower farm ) good luck
