Anyone knows the safe Jaundice level for babies. My boy(1month old) is G6PD Deficiency, hence has jaundice. Visited the doctor today, SB level was at 163. Doctor said baby is fine, not at critical level. But still needs observations. We as parents, feels worry for him. A little baby after all. Can anyone provide info or advices? Thanks.

180 is considered borderline and is often treated with saline drip just to be safe. 200 is when they start treatment under lights. Both events are stressful for everyone concerned.

Two things you can do to help bring down the levels are to keep the baby by the window and take him outside during daylight hours. The sunlight actually helps his liver function, which is why jaundice is a bigger problem for babies born during the winter. Going under a sunlamp, though, is very dangerous for his skin, so don't do that!

You don't say how he is fed, but when my baby had jaundice, the maternity nurses told me to give her a little cool camomile or fennel tea off a spoon before each feeding (2 or 3 teaspoons). I think water that has been boiled and cooled would work just as well as any herbal tea (I live in Germany where herbal teas are always given to babies and young children).

The theory is that the tea goes through the body quickly and helps the liver flush out the extra SB. Breast milk and formula alone contain so many proteins that a lot of the liquid is used up in digestion.

This is something you should be talking to your pediatrition more in depth about, not asking on Yahoo answers. If you still have questions about your sons Jaundice, call the pediatricain and ask. That's what they are there for. If you don't feel comfortable doing that or they won't help, start shopping for a new Pediatrician.

In reality no level is a safe level... needs monitoring 24/7. It's a manageable condition beware of infection levels. It is bacteria that causes temp to spike & can cause potential problems like dehydration etc. Do as your Dr said- sunlight helps plus Dr/ medical team orders eg. well ventilated place, baths, love, fresh milk, antibiotics + cream to keep skin moist & healthy list goes on. If any changes in your child behavior, coloring, temp levels or skin condition go straight to the phone & call your nurse/ hospital better safe than sorry. Must keep baby comfortable - Baby can't regulate their body like adults. Give meds as per instructions & keep up child fluid intake. Don't give infants water they can't convert it per say. Stick to breast milk / formula milk only. Pray that all be ok. Be happy stay positive & get support all helps baby heal himself...no easy task I know cause both my children had jaundice. Cheers 99

Chai,
There is no real level good or bad. Jaundice is normal in most babies and he is going to be just fine.
