Its 2:30 AM--- I was sleeping and about 2 hours ago awoke with intense pain on the skin of my stomach. There was a small red bump which has now grown to be about the diameter of an orange--- red, swollen, VERY painful! I looked for an insect but could find none.
Live in HI--- we have centipedes, spiders, scopions--- but I've never seen one in my bedroom.
The hospital is 40 minutes away--- doesn't seem like an emergency--- but the pain is increasing, not going away. I'm only using the computer because I can't sleep for the pain--need to distract my mind.
What should I do?

Thank you everyone! I feel like I have friends out there, even in the wee hours of the AM!
Due to your advice, I called the emergency room and they said apply ice, take some pain med, and call an ambulance if I experienced any itching through my body and especially in my throat, etc. Swelling of air passages is what is really dangerous, and can be fatal. the ice helped a little--- took a vicodan, but even that didn't take away all pain!
Still don't know what got me--- but it is considerable better this morning-- altho I will watch carefully (and do a major cleaning of my room when I feel a little better!)
Thank you again!

Get to a doctor, walk-in clinic or the hospital right now!
If is is that painful, has spread that quickly (size of an orange-Wow!)- you need medical attention ASAP.

Please don't take this lightly. It is an emergency. The toxins from a poisonous creature of any kind can get into your blood stream extremely fast and you can go into shock. I am not trying to scare you, just worried for you.

Well i would put ice on it straight away that will help with the swelling and don't sleep for a while monitor yourself if you feel weak or dizzy or in any way abnormal then i would say its an emergency but if nothing happens and the ice doesnt help the pain or swelling i would see ur doctor during the day. I'm sure your fine but just put some ice on it and it should help i woke up one morning to the same thing although i had two little puncture marks i put ice on for 20mins off for 20 mins and repeated till i could keep it off without pain. i hope everything is fine and i jhope you r feeling better soon

It could be anything from a bed bug to a spider. Clean the area with alcohol and keep an eye on it . You may be having an allergic reaction to whatever bit you. If it continues to hurt then see your doctor.

Sounds like a scorpion....if you want get a black light and check your room from now on....scorpions fluoresce...it really is cool. Some spiders too.....I live in TX and have a battery operated one I take camping with me too. If you see a scorpion an easy way to get them is get some tape and roll it up so the sticky side is out...pick them up ...roll em' up and throw them away...Sometimes stomping won't get them good and dead. They are tough. Take some benadril if you have any.

Ring directory and ask for the number for the Poisons information centre. Describe symptoms to you and they'll advise whether it's urgent or not........ Meantime put lavender oil on a handfull of cotton wool balls and press against bite, will ease the pain for you.

Do it NOW.................Good Luck

i would go to the hospital - dont wait until it gets worse...it might not be an emergency to anyone else - but it is to you if its really causing you pain...you have nothing to lose by doing this..

hope it gets better so that you can get back to sleep buddy!

You'd better get to the nearest healthcare facility asap.

I have a friend who lost his foot because of a recluse spider bite.

Go!!! Now!!!
