Mc Donalds...want fried with that...

Seriously If you want to get int the media industry you do NOT NOT NOT do a media degree.

This is from someone in the media industry.

This is how it really works

If you want to get into set design you study carpentry, cambinate making, decoration.

If you want to get into lighting you become an electrician...
Good idea as well as much of your time won't be employed in the industry so helps to have a regualr job as well you can take time off at short notice like if self emp.

For production office workd its regualr office skills like 60wpm typing.

You need to have good social and office politics, networking and contacts as its very much who you know and how to work people

You also need to be able to handle the low end jobs for you to get anywhere ie as a runner.

Being fit, knowing how to cable wrap and hold said heavy cables. Knowing how to make different coffees (ie your laite from mochachino) and knowing areas like Soho in London where much of the industry is like a courior. Ie you need to find production company a.Heres the address... Bit harder then that... tyou want to ask where it is by landmark as most likley on a road where virtually no door numbers, past the brothel, through the alley, up the firescape and blue door on 3rd floor.

Oh and if you take too long you loose you job.

How to handle the kind of stuck up tit who would make a complaint against you for asking what flavour crisps they want when they ask you for crisps and be popular.

You do realise film shoots start at 7-7.30 am (earlier if you want breakfast and often last 12 hours.

Get some experience as a film extra... david agency, hammersmith and galloways 2 (look up galloways one the actor deptartment, lexham mews both in London) have opended their books for a couple of weeks only.

Send cvs to comapnaies for runner work.

Say usuling the white pages in the library, or things like the PACt director from PACt Producers Alliance for Film and television.

The only course worth doing is at Ravensbourne college in Kent which is not on Ucas but on ADAR.

Westminster Uni is supposed to be ok though or the London Film School.

They will want you to know what you wnt to be.

Editiing, audio, sound often in facility houses in London.

Camerawork, ligting, crew can be anywhere... helps to have a car.

Specail effects is engineering and art and design... Much of it is 3d animation on systems like

Avid Softimage, Maya (which you can get a free student copy from alias if you ask nice), 3d studio max.

Hard software to learn. Need good PC.

Avid also makes the main edition software which you need to learn the mac version.

Much of it is not what you know but who you know.

Get a subscrition to a newspaper/mag called Broadcast in WHSmiths.

Contact the union BECTU

etc.

Be more specific with your course content than a "media studies" degree. Media studies degrees will qualify you for the counter at McDonalds these day. Try something more specific like journalism or broadcasting.
