First, it was nothing but a mutual something for coal and steel. Now, they dictate everything: the constitution, the monetary unit, the privatization of public services, fishing, everything. Now that they have achieved this, Merkel wants to expand rules as to acquire even more power. I am afraid that the EU will grow too strong to contain, and that they will become even more dominant towards their citizens. Soon, Eurosceptics like me will be tried and put in jail. The constitution is the worst step yet, as they force everyone into it. What do you think, is the EU necessary or the new USA ??

I am worried about the EU, but not for the same reasons. The European Commision is a non elected institution that decides what has to be addressed. However, it is the individual nations governments and the EU parilment that are responsible for voting on it. Each country, when they have the European Parilmentary election should elect their country's commisioner at the same time, or at least have the option of vetoing them.
The EU is about cooperation economically, socially and politically. I do not see Eurosceptics being imprisoned, since it would defy the European Convention on Human Rights. A consitution is going too far, but the Union needs to tie up all the treaties and have a proper mission statement about where the institutions are going. Calling it a constitution is wrong.
The monetary union is only helpful when the area is a true OCA, Optimum Currency Area and all the countries economic rythyms are in sync. However, the Euro has helped smaller countries compete and increases their economies due to a large stable currency.
Privitisation of public services, this is not tue, the EU demands opening up of markets and allowing healthy competition. The best way to go in this regard is for non-essential public services to have the Governments as large shareholders, say 20-30% where if the industry ever gets into dire trouble the government can step in with its company and take over. Healthcare and certain other industries are not affected.
Fishing, this is to do with the needs of the many. Over fishing, particularly by Spain and the UK has led to depletion of fish stocks. This has to be rectified to prevent long term disruption to supplies or even extinction. The EU should however step in with jobs and safegurads for the fishermen affected.
At the start you said it started out as something for coal and steel. After WWII these two industries fuelled and partially caused the war. For the six founding countries, tying the industries of each country together made war alot more diffcult.
It has evolved from an organisation for the prevention of war to an organisation hell bent on making life better for the citizens of its ever increasing membership. At times it goes of the deep end, but Eurosceptics and others are not blind or silent.
The EU unlike other transnational organisations can be reigned in by citizens. Look at the Netherlands and France with the constitution. They will not be the last countries to reject it.
If you believe the EU is becoming to strong, act. Contact your MEP, your local newspaper. It is open to debate, whatever you believe you can believe the EU does not stop you. Some politicans may want to gag you, but others wont.
Merkal wishes to make Holocaust denial a crime throughout the EU. This I feel is wrong as it is against Free Speech, but also because it removes the ability for debate so the next generation will not see what the emotion of those that have been affected or seen the affect on their family members by this atrocity.
The EU will not become the new USA it has too much diversity and who needs another USA anyways.
And for those Amadáns who are liking it to the USSR its a Free Market association, the anthesis or the USSR. Socialism mixed with capitalism works, look at Ireland and the scandinavian nations. Countries just have to get the balance right for their country and economic situation.

What I find most disturbing is the leftists are trying to dictate everything, including the suppression of the conservatives who are voicing the same concerns.
The EU is dictating all kinds of rules and regulations to their member states often against the will of the people. I don't aliken the EU to the USA. The USA grew together with the same constitution and same core values. The growing EU is more reminescent of the USSR, forcing its rules upon it's member states. It is growing faster than the infractructure can handle and instead of shared wealth it is created a weaker, not stronger, common economy.

great question, if only this question could be answered here in this forum ,in my opinion, there are several things to consider.
1.nessesity is irrelavent, there hasn't been a constitution writen that has not lost it's value over time,so if you don't like the one writen today ,wait awhile it will be amended to suite the needs of the those wanting power and glory for their achievments.
(and there will always be those willing to sacrafice their belief's for such things)
2.economics will always be the driving force behind government that is a necessity.
and each economic engine is unique to it's most plentiful resource and those who contol it are the ones who hold the power.
3.the privatization of public services is another way for the government to differ responcability and create loop holes to differ government money's to dummy corperations so it can fund what ever project's they want to push quietly.
4. you might be afraid that the EU will grow to powerfull but remmember a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.politics purpose is mostly illusionary, by publically debating issue's the populace is under the impression that the government machine is working for them . when actually the trend tends to favor business over civil rights.
5. power is ironic ,for the ones who truely have the power don't want it (the people ) and the ones who want it have to lie inorder to get it and then once they have it don't know how to use it.(except for their own ideology)which makes the ones with power easily manipulated by those with money.(business)
6, i think inoder for a government to be truely represent the people it governs it must be void of business influences.(lobbiest)
if you think a man that payes .01 cent twords taxes has less power than a company that has to pay millions in taxes each quarter your wrong.(companies can't vote)

In addition to many of the excellent previous points, particularly about leftist / socialist influence in the EU, the EU has expanded too quickly and recklessly for its own good. If Turkey is allowed to join, it will continue its dilution.

Funny how many in U.S. think the EU is failing when in fact the EU populace are living in a more lucrative and and stable environment than those peopled within US.
From longevity, working conditions, health access, greater say in government functions and especally economic stablity of a captial system vastly different from it's base upwards has allowed it to be and continues to grow while the US is on a downward spiral of permanent indebtness, loss of rights and economic advancement opportunity the Euro system is better on the individuals than the US system.
That the individual percieves loss of that individuality to a system that demands conformity is no differnt in either system but the chances of limiting it is greater in Euros than within US.
It is doubtfull wether eitehr system can stop its future merging inot a system of world wide confromity and yes the individual will cease to be as only the system will warant existence.

I don't see why the EU should be any less successful than the USA. Don't worry, here in a America states are allowed to keep much of their cultural identity. You'll see the same if the EU gets bigger.

Because the all the countries of the EU are moving toward Socialism, their economies are failing.
Because of National Health Care and Socialism, the EU will be made up of Third World Nations in the future.
Our Democrat Party in the US wants us to move toward your Socialist System, even though you are losing freedom and your economies are in the tank;.
Go figure.

Trade and cooperation is the key to peace and understanding. A strong Europe complements the USA. It could even reform some of the undesirable things the USA does in the Western Hemisphere.

It relies upon which international places stay a factor of it. It additionally relies upon if each and all of the international places that are area of it may administration their spending. people who're valuable will fall ill of having to handle different international places blunders. i think of that's a possibility for it too.
