find the electrons in the outermost shell (valence shell).
if the electrons are from 1 to 4 the valency is also the same i mean +1 ~ +4
but for 4 it is not certain if its +4 or -4
as he can accept four electrons or give away all four electrons dependin on his energy considerations
for atoms having electrons from 5 to 7 have a valency from -3 to -1 respectively.

+ means atom will lose electrons of that amount to be electrically stable.
- means atom will gain electron of that amount to become electrically stable.


valency of atoms having 8 electrons in valence shell is 0.

Its taken to be the number of electrons in the outtermost shell of an atom.

if an atom is in group 1 (of the periodic table), it will have a valency of 1.
if an atom is in group 2, it will have a valency of 2.
and so on..

it depends on what group they are in. If they are in the I they will have 1 valence electron in it's outer shell, group II will have two and so on.

Also if you know the electron configuration and how many are in each shell then you look at the last s or p shell or both and count how many are in those ie 1se2 2se2 2pe3. there are 5 valence electrons in the outer shell, because I added the 2s and 2p shells.

EX:-
phophorous=15 therefore valency is 5

defenite combining capacity is called valance...so the no. of electrons in the atom (last row) is combined to another forming atoms....exam. 2 atoms of hydrogen combine with one atom of oxygem to form to form water..so valance of o is 2
