There are three BASIC requirements for germination:
1)moisture
2)proper temperature
3)sufficient amount of oxygen

Notice that no mention is made about light or soil. (although some lawn seed does germinate at a better rate when exposed to light).

Some seeds cannot germinate in light, it inhibits their germination.

Others need light, it stimulates germination.

Others don't care about light & dark.

Germination of many seeds is controlled by phytochrome, which responds to light & dark.

They don't need sunlight.

They germinate when it is dark and damp (underneath soil)

roots grow in the direction of gravity and the stem in the opposite direction.

when it reaches sun light that's when it goes green.

It enables them to germinate of they get covered by soil
