From my experience, it is not the smoke but it is the type of environment that comes with it. In other words, it is more psychological than physical. If there was no one smoking around me, I can then quit for months. But if there were people smoking around and these people are of some significance to me, then i will start smoking along. It is sort of a social act.
The issue here is starting to smoke. It is like a door. Once you open then it is never closed. If you have never smoked before, you will never feel or think a need for a smoke no matter what happens. It is not in your options. But if you have smoked once before, it is the "desire" more than the need for a smoke that will arouse whenever you feel under stress or you are feeling lonely or miserable or enjoying a nice veiw etc... You will always have smoking as an option in your list of things to do. But I tell you one thing for sure... Any smoker CAN live with smoking. Try it!!!

At first it feels good -- a kind of mild high.
Later it begins to interfere with things like going up stairs.
It also becomes a kind of ritual. Wake up, have a smoke.
Think about how to start the day. Have a smoke. Think about your next project. Have a smoke. Nervous about something. Have a smoke...........you get the idea.
It takes over your life.
At some point most people begin to realize the pleasures are outweighed by the addiction, the costs, and health issues.
But it is an addiction, so it's had to quit.
I did after six years of smoking--cold turkey (best way) but two most difficult weeks of my life. Each day was like putting a brick in a wall. 44 years later I have a very strong wall.
But hang it if a passing whiff of smoke still doesn't smell good.
Powerful stuff.

I started when I was 15 doing my exams. It's something I'd seen all my family do and wanted to see what it was all about. Of course at first, you can have 1-2 a day and then not have anymore for weeks. You think that's the way it's always going to be, that you can give up whenever you want, but before long you start going out and smoking more, then you switch from buying a 10 pack to a 20 pack etc etc until you end up smoking FT. 12 years later and I'm still chugging away :-(
I'm sure everyone who does smoke would like to give up. There's no postives, only health and financial negatives.

I am a smoker. Obvious but truthful answer - people smoke because they are addicted to nicotine. Perhaps a better question would have been, why do people start smoking?

because its rebellious yeah!
until you try to give up....
the worst thing about smoking is the tax revenue it creates. without this ( and the tobacco barons golf course dealing) it would have been banned years ago.
