There are three main types of lupus:

Systemic lupus erythematosus (eh-RITH-eh-muh-TOE-sus) is the most common form. It’s sometimes called SLE, or just lupus. The word “systemic” means that the disease can involve many parts of the body such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. SLE symptoms can be mild or serious.

Discoid lupus erythematosus mainly affects the skin. A red rash may appear, or the skin on the face, scalp, or elsewhere may change color.

Drug-induced lupus is triggered by a few medicines. It’s like SLE, but symptoms are usually milder. Most of the time, the disease goes away when the medicine is stopped. More men develop drug-induced lupus because the drugs that cause it, hydralazine and procainamide, are used to treat heart conditions that are more common in men.

hmmmm.....SOunds a bit sick (Puss in the Lu...)...sorry...

Hope below details will help you...

1. What is lupus?

Lupus is a chronic (long-lasting) autoimmune disease in which the immune system, for unknown reasons, becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue. This attack results in inflammation and brings about symptoms.

What does autoimmune mean?
Literally it means immune activity directed against the self. The immune system fights the body itself (Auto=self). In autoimmune diseases, the immune system makes a mistake and reacts to the body's own tissues.

What is inflammation?
Literally it means setting on fire. It is a protective process our body uses when tissues are injured. Inflammation helps to eliminate a foreign body or organism (virus, bacteria) and prevent further injury. Signs of inflammation include; swelling, redness, pain and warmth. If the signs of inflammation are long lasting, as they can be in lupus, then damage to the tissues can occur and normal function is impaired. This is why the treatment of lupus is aimed at reducing the inflammation.

Well, my mother has lupus...she is 50-years-old and was diagnosed I think when she was about 18-years-old. She is fairly healthy. She does have rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and she's on several different medications because lupus affects your immune system to work properly. Basically, it's a disease that is prominent in black women although my mother is a white woman. It used to be deadly but they have different meds now that can control it but it's still a pretty serious disease.

Lupus can be very mild or in some cases fatal as the disease attacks organs and tissues as if they were a disease or foreign to the body.
