A friend's windsheild exploded and she's unsure if somone might have thrown something to cause this, or if it was the extremely cold frosty weather.

yes it can happen ... a friend of mine had the same thing happen, we worked off the back end of an airport runway and thought perhaps a plane caused it. The people who replaced the window said it's not uncommon for these windows to explode, heat or cold it's something that happens. odd huh! I don't know if it makes a difference but in either extreme I open a window just a tiny bit to let the air equal out inside to outside temp.

Heat causes windshields to explode because of pressure inside the car. Cold would make the windshield more brittle, doesn't take much to break it. My guess is something or someone broke it if it was very cold.
