A marriage license is only permission to marry, this typically expires in 30 to 60 days depending on the state!

A marriage license simply gives one permission to get married. Without an actual marriage, the license means nothing. Both parties have to sign the license AFTER the wedding (or elopement), so without that key element, the license is useless.
