There was a large community of native Ethiopians who spoke a Hebrew-influenced language and practiced a form of orthodox Judaism. As far as I know, it's never been established exactly how they got there.

Israel air-lifted half of the population out in 84-85 because of the famine, but had to abandon it suddenly because of the political situation (can't remember specifics, info is on the net). Then in 1991, after a 'rebel' take-over, El Al flew the rest of the community out, some 14,000 in 36 hours.

I think that there is a separate community that claims to be Jewish but has not been recognized by Israel. I can't find anything on the net just now.

Do you mean ethiopia and Israel? I know when years ago watching a doucmentarythey are speaking of far back generations from Mosses time ....according to my friend who is Jewish she says Yes
