For England to have royalty? Why is this form of government still in existence? The "royalty" live it up while there are citizens perishing from hunger and poverty. Is this no different than dictators who are in power, who use the wealth of the country for their personal gain and share with their friends and family?

Because that is their culture and the way they have always run their country. It works well for them... hmmmm wonder if we could we use this same argument for Saddam and Iraq???

Because that is their culture and the way they have always run their country. It works well for them. Just like we here in the USA we have our own culture and way of running our country. And, it works well for us. I have never heard any complaints toward England until now. The only complaints I have heard is History, when people fled England to make their own Colony here on US soil. At that time, it was not US soil but belonged to what is known now as the American Indians. If you want to talk about dictatorship, read up on your American History. We took this land from the Indians and moved them to poverty on reservations which was the poorest of poor lands. But that has nothing to do with your question and is a different subject all together. What you describe in your question, fits the way England was being run according to history books. But today.... I don't think so.

Most Brits are proud of their heritage and unique history, which primarily revolves around the royals, past and present. Traditions , pomp and circumstance is still carried on to this day by royalty and Brits are steeped in tradition. Yes, money is wasted with all the traveling, ceremonies, galas etc, but what country does not waste--hell our American government wastes billions each year on 250 dollar screwdrivers and spending millions to find out why the trade centers collapsed, which we all knew was fire ignited by jet fuel that burns very hot and melted beams ( for example). There are people in American living in poverty, starving, homeless, have no health care, so really are we any different. So dictatorship, monarchy, communism or "the American way" there really is not a lot of difference is there? Also , when traveling to Britian, what do the tourists do? See the Tower of London, The changing of the guard, palaces, castles, museums, churches all because of the royals.. I say long live the Queen , she is truly regal, and Britian should be proud, and long live the monarchy long after Elizabeth is gone.

The royal family are not a form of government. They have no real power. They are a figurehead. No-one in England dies from hunger and poverty. Yes, some people are poor but are there not poor people in every country?

It's different to dictators because as I said, they have no power and do not make any laws.

EDIT: In your additional details, you appear to have completely ignored the British citizens on this thread who are telling you that they form no kind of government. Are you seriously comparing the royal family with Saddam's Ba'athist regime in Iraq? I have to say. with the greatest respect, that makes you sound really silly and quite ignorant.

Nobody is perishing from hunger in Britain today! The Royals and the pagentry are a tourist attraction which is good for the economic health of the nation. They have no actual political power. It's all good really.
When Britain ceases to exist because Scotland gets independance we'll have to think again about the Royals. I favour two seperate secular Republics of England and Scotland if unity cannot be maintained without the Monarchy.

They are mainly head figures , they elect their government that make all the decisions. It is good for tourism and makes them different , it is a rich tradition. There will always be rich and poor people it seems unfair but that is how business works as well.
The Queen of England is also head of state in Canada where I live and she does not interfere or tell us what to do.

If you are going to make facetious remarks about our Royal Family...please make sure you have your facts right...

Our Royal Family is the Royal Family of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, not just of England.

You know, I read somewhere that the Royals pay taxes, just like anyone else.

They're a fantastic tourist draw. You'd have to add all the money spent by tourists to see them, and subtract all that from any money the Royals "waste".

I saw the Queen and Philip once, years ago, when they were on a tour thru Canada. I was impressed.
