Winchester was the capital of England under the Saxons. After the Norman conquest William the conqueror named London and Winchester dual capitals of England. I have not been able to ascertain how long this dual capital situation lasted.

Prior to the Norman invasion Winchester was technically the English capital. However, by around 1017 under King Canute London had become the de-facto capital. Following the Norman invasion London became the economic capital and seat of government, while religious power still resided in Winchester. Later, under Edward the Confessor, Westminster was built and by his death in 1065, London was firmly established as the capital city of England.

Colchester was the first capital under the Romans, before they moved it to London. Winchester was also capital for a bit during Saxon times. But the capital has been London for 99.9% of the time.
