I suppose hypnotism could be the effect, along with often being in a room without that much airflow, overly warm, and the speaker is talking in a monotone. In lectures I've often had to develope shutting off my mind (else I'd scream 'Go away you're annoying me!') while my eyes are still open. And no matter how hard I try I can't remember a word of what was said unless it was so idiotic that it caught my attention.

Sounds like hypnosis to me!

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net

If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.

In any given situation, if you do not understand something near the beginning of a lecture/meeting etc, you will definitely be bored by the end of the lecture/meeting etc.
Subconsciously you become bored (a little depressed) because of your lack of understanding. When you are depressed you naturally switch off and therefore understand even less.
If you try to be enthusiastic and keep an open mind, at every lecture/meeting etc and ask questions whenever you have doubts in your mind, you will enjoy it more and less likely to get bored.

this sort of drowsiness you mention,
is usually caused by poor ventilation, ( lack of oxygen)
within the hall or room ,where the lecture is being held.

Also, if the lecturer, is not animated and interested in his subject ,or the pupils reactions to him,
This creates a dreadful lethargy and apathy, in all present .

In either case, it is very difficult to study and take in what is being said .

Ideally, the college or university should ensure good ventilation in the lecture halls.
And employ , top notch lecturers, to deliver their stuff !!!

In the *real world* .. we just yawn and struggle :(

it could be that all the people in the room are using up more oxygen and this causes you to be tired.
Lack of sleep too.
Depends on if you are interested in the subject too, if you dont like it then you dont listen and it turns into a monotonous tone and this repetition and lack of stimulation causes you brain to relax and power down.

Im going through this now.

Im in work... and nothing is exciting me.

Nothing is keeping me wanting more, the work im doing isnt the most exciting at the moment, which makes the mind "switch off"

best thing you can do ,is get some fresh air and take 5 mins break

its more than likely caused by not enough air being taken into your system .....probably the boss or potentially higher beings are using all the available oxygen in the room ..with their incessant talk about flowcharts or progress chasing or team building exercises ....hope that helps ., the solution would be to kill everyone else in the room and save all the oxygen for yourself
