Since both the chicken and the egg create the other in certain circumstances (a chicken emerges from an egg; an egg is laid by a chicken) it is ambiguous which originally gave rise to the other. Purely logical attempts to resolve the dilemma result in an infinite regress, since an egg was caused by a chicken, which was caused by an egg, etc. Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. The solution may require an examination of syntax and may rely on verification from advances in modern genetic science. When used in reference to difficult problems of causality, the chicken and egg dilemma is often used to appeal to the futility of debate and lay it to rest.

If we address it PURELY logically and not as the hypothetical dilemma that it actually is (as previously noted) and don't taint the factual data with questions of creationism vs. evolution, etc., the obvious answer must be: Chicken. This is because, as twonkie76 mentioned, the egg couldn't be incubated without a chicken or some other animal to lie on it, and the question does not provide us with any data that allows us to presume there exists any other animals, chickens or otherwise. This is based on the presumption that if the answer were indeed "egg" that the answer is based on a precept that the embryo within will be incubated and hatch to become a live chicken. Of course, we are not provided with that information either, and I guess I rendered my own answer obsolete by following that line of inquiry, so, if nothing else, you made me exercise my brain. Thanks.

It depends upon your philosophy.

If you are a creationist it was the chicken, because God created the chicken, which then laid an egg.
If you are an evolutionist it was the egg. As the creature that laid the first chicken egg was a "Not-quite-a-chicken"

A second answer to this question could be: The chicken, alphabetically.

The chicken. Here's my approach: 1) God created all animals, not eggs. 2) If an egg was first, what sat on the egg to incubate it? 3) Do you think a baby chick would survive on it's own? Just like God created Adam, not a baby, who would take care of the baby?

I think a dinosaur layed an egg and a chicken was born. hence, the egg came first.

The Egg!

Well, if you believe in the bible, the chicken came first. Noah brought two of every living thing on board the ark, therefore, the chicken came before the egg.
I've found that if one believes what's written in the bible, life is a whole lot easier to live here on this wicked old earth.
God bless.
