I want to check it out, but they want my credit card info so I can get their "linden dollars" to use in the game. Advice?

You definitely don't need to pay money or give your credit card info to play Second Life. Just skip whatever steps there are where they ask for that - it's totally optional. A Basic Account lets you do everything there is to do in the game other than buy things or own land.

I believe you can skip that step. However, I personally didn't enjoy the "game". It's fun to start off with but the world is so big it's very overwhelming and the majority of it is adult content (I don't know about the newer teen channels however). Apart from the odd few people who are actually using the "game" for business reasons etc. it seems more like a 3D adult chat room to me. My advise? If you'rel ooking for a fun online game, check out some of the other MMO's out there, this one isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I suggest you avoid giving your credit card. You can explore and socialize and earn a little Second Life money without having to use your real money. Overall, the experience is unique and interesting but not worth spending real $$ on.

Better off just playing Sims 2.

You can decline the request. You don't need L$ to play, you can get stuff from people if you're nice and they like you. You only need L$ if you want to buy stuff.
