As from 1st April 2007 the police will not be allowed to breathalyse anyone who can prove that they are of the Islamic faith. This is because the faith forbids the use of alcohol and therefore to suggest that a devout Muslim has been drinking is to insult their faith. The law applies to everyone, regardless of colour

Will the same law apply to Methodists? They're not allowed alcohol either. Asking a Muslim to take a breathalyser is not insulting Islam. It is showing up the weakness in an individual.

a) This, if true, would be a disgusting breach of equal protection under the law. People of any religion do acts contrary to that religion's teachings all the time (after all, in the West, most thiefs, murderers liars, conmen and adulterers are nominally christian and those crimes all go against the 10 commendments). So singling out one minority faith for exemption from suspicion of one crime should be worthy of getting all lawmakers voting for it cast out of their jobs and made ineligible and forbidden from participating in politics (or enjoyiing any civil rights, for that matter) for life.

b) how do you reliably prove that you belong to the muslim faith and that you're a pious and faith abiding memer of that religion? Even I, a Catholic raised agnostic could recite the fatiha, and I DO look like I came from muslim dominant areas.

PS As of April 1 ... good point for you, I've been had

Its not right cause anyone can be dishonest with their faith so some muslims will drink alcohol the same as some christians have sex before their married. Everyone who is suspected of drink driving should be breathalysed regardless of thier faith.

I think that this law is challengeable by adherents of other religions who are not permitted by their beliefs to drink alcohol. A great deal of public money is going to be sent going to the European Court of Justice to demonstrate this fact. Moreover, this very sinister move marks the beginning of a two tier society in which the Muslims are gaining the upper hand. Don't our legislators understand what they are doing? And whoever persuaded them that Muslims don't drink? Turks and Turkish Cypriots most certainly do -- and sometimes with quite spectacular results! Are they going to escape breathalysing, simply by paying lip service to their beliefs?

I had three pubs in Birmingham and there were many Muslim men who were regulars and they all drank alcohol.

I have never heard of the law you are talking about if this is true then they should bring out a law banning Muslims from buying alcohol and a charge of anyone knowingly aiding and abetting them be given a custodial sentence.

This is the law in Muslim countries and as Britain is now mainly ruled by Islamic customs we should follow this Islamic custom.

As a complete amateur, I would suggest that if the police have reason to suspect that anyone is under the influence of any chemical substance, then take a blood or urine sample and test it for (whatever - does islam permit the taking of ANY drugs, either medicinal or recreational?)
Failure to allow any form of testing whatsoever should be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

If the law stands and is enforced,
then no one in theory can be done for drunk driving
as any one can say well I'm a muslim how does the court prove what faith you currently hold.
It's rubbish like so much else PC....

Well, that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. My faith tells me not to use drugs so I should never have to take a drug test for work? If it were in the United States, it would violate the equal protection clause of our Constitution. It's hard for me to believe the British law would permit treating people differently because of their professed religious beliefs.

Oh I say! So let them prove it. Bet they can't.

P.S. All faiths have their rogues. How dare anyone expect favouritism due to a label.
