It was changing fairly slowly. The first few years of the 20th century were merely an extension of the 19th (as currently the 21st is very like the 20th). In 1906 a radical, Liberal Government was elected, however. This led to the very first beginnings of the welfare state, with old age pensions being introduced in 1910. Britain entered into an alliance with France, The Entente Cordiale, which was a great change from the past, France having been seen as the traditional European enemy for centuries. The 'race' to the 1st World War started with the building of more and more 'dreadnoughts' (very large battleships). There were a few more cars on the road (though not very many). The UK ceased to be able to regard itself as an impregnable island when Blériot flew the channel for the fist time in July 1909.
