TIVO is a brand-name DVR

a DVR uses a hard disk to record programsas they happen...so you can be watching TV and pause it, rewind it, or keep it on the disk. You can also schedule the DVR to record things in "smart" ways, like asking it to record every episode of a show, or have it automatically search and record things by actor, director, sport, etc.

usually, a DVR gets informaiton about the programming you receive in an electronic format so it can do all these "smart" things with recording.

TO make a joke of it..."what do you get when you cross a VCR with a computer?" TIVO.

Tivo is a company who makes PVR systems. Some people generically use the word TIVO to refer to watching anything that they recorded using another PVR system. The good people at TIVO probably don't like it.
