Leonard Susskind wrote an excellent book called "The Cosmic Landscape and the Illusion of Intelligent Design"....great book. also Brian Greene wrote several, one called "The Elegant Universe" and if fact several TV shows based on those books were made which were also very good. Both authors do deal with String theory and start going into Membrane theory as well if you've heard of that...whoever posted above me has no clue what he's talking about. Dont go get a particle physics textbook it will drive you crazy :)

Try some advanced texts dealing with particle physics. Separate advanced texts on String Theory have not arrived as yet as the theory is still not fully developed.
