A company can make someone redundant only if:

* the business is going down and they need to lay off
* if you cause any direct harm to the company in terms of direct competition to their business

companies need to have eligible grounds for redundancy, you dint mention WHY they made you redundant. You can raise an interrogation..

It depends on which State you live. In many Mid-West States for example, employees are by law "at will". I swear I'm not making this up. An "at will" employee can be let go at the will of the employer. This law was added to the books in order to entice new businesses after years of frivolous lawsuits began to scare them off. It is likely that your company may be self insured (health care). Your new kid represents a financial burden to them that they believe is greater than your value or productive output to the company. Further more, thanks to people taking advanced of pregnancies in the past, taking 3 months off, companies today are reluctant to keep pregnant woman on the payroll when they need the job the most.
