Because that's what they see in the media. Tv, radio, newspapers, magazines. Especially womens magazines. Full of very successful, beautiful, slim and celebrated women. Being intelligent, kind, caring and considerate with good manners is not important anymore.

I don't know about most people, the small minded maybe but I still hope they are a minority. There are many people with money and good clothes who haven't worked to earn them - and these are the types of people that usually look down on those of us without.

Unfortunatly we live in a ver materialistic word and alot of people value status and money over most things.Personally I value family and my husband and kids over anything superficial as thats the only thing that matters.

Its something you grow out of in your 20's when you realise no one actually cares about what you have and that material possessions are pretty much worthless compared to inner contentment love, family and real friends.

Its why people change careers in their 30's often for less money but for work with more personal satisfaction to them.

Just part of growing up.......

because we no longer live in small villages where everyone knows everyone and reputations are king.

we live in societies where people move a hundred miles to go to school and another hundred to get a job.

we can go anywhere...and a "fresh start" is as easy as a drive and a new lease on an apartment/flat.

we live in a classless society...that is, anyone can rise to power...where your heirarchical place in the world is not determined by caste, or "royal blood" but by bank account.

You are right a lot of people are superficial these days! However, the key is not to be one of them yourself...........do not take them seriously, ignore them!
There still are some decent people out there, who will like you for who you are, not what you have!Just pick your friends more carefully........

It's called creating an impression. Birds of Paradise do it, so do Chimpanzees, Bees, Flowers, everything ... in one form or another!

It's also called natural selection. Survival of the fittest and ... of course, the best presented.

So why shouldn't humans do it!?
