Sheep belong to the same family is cattle. In taxonomy (catergorising living things) this family is called bovidae which is where the term "bovid" comes from for cows. Horses belong to the family known as Equidae, hence they are called equids or equine. Dogs are refered to as canids or canines because they belong to the family of canidae and cats are referd to as feline because they belong to the family of felidae. Somebody has mentioned Ovids. The term is actually Ovis. The scientific name for a sheep is Ovis aries. The word "Ovis" relates to the genus. Animal species which share the same genus are considered more closely related than those that don't. Cows are related to sheep, but are not so closely related to sheep as dogs are to wolves (dogs and wolves share the same genus which in their case is Canis), because of this they are catorgerised into a different genus which for cows is "Bos". The scientific name for a cow is Bos taurus.
