Desmond Haynes was the all time great front footing opener.

But all time great, Viv Richards. Champion in his on right!

its hard because Garry Sobers was a champ too. But these batsmen faced adversity when they played. And they showed Australia that they were the elite. Put the old West Indian side against the Australians and the Australians will lose hands down. Like Border knows nothing could have beaten the glory days of West India

From the list you have given, it is ponting. But I regard Steve Waugh as the best batsman. He may not be a treat to watch when he bats but I remember a double hundred which he scored against the mighty west indians (ambrose, walsh and company) on a fast bouncy track to win a test match for the aussies. He has played several such innings in one dayers as well as test matches.

There is only two worth comparing: Sachin and Lara.

Lara, without a doubt. His record speaks for itself. 400 not out in tests plus two more tripple hundreds, 501 not out in first class cricket. He is also responsible for more match winning/saving innings than any other batsman mentioned.

Lara also does very better in foreign conditions than Suchin.
